LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville's Real Time Crime Center now has some ears to complement its eyes around town.
The center is now using ShotSpotter, a program that captures gunshot sounds and relays that information to the RTCC operators who can then pull the scene up on camera.
LMPD Major Josh Judah says the system became operative June 1 and covers six square miles of the city, mostly the known crime hot spots.
Judah says in those two weeks the system has captured 89 shooting incidents, many of which were not reported to 911 dispatchers, and has yielded one arrest.
He says the system only captures gunshot sounds and is not monitoring people's conversations. He also added the RTCC cameras do not have the ability to record sound.
